Life isn’t forever and the way you choose to spend your time will determine if you’re successful or not.
Toxic habits are those habits which abstain us from growing, it adversely affects our personality and overall lifestyle. You are the sum of your habits.
4 Toxic Habits to Give up to Become Successful
On the basis of my personal experiences, these are 4 most important toxic habits which one must give up if you want to be successful.
We have a variety of people in life and the people we choose to spend our time with will have the biggest impact on your personal growth and achievement and our overall personality development.
“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” – Jim Rohn.
Because we begin to copy their habits, thoughts, beliefs, and conversations. That’s why many twenty year olds party every weekend, have poor health habits, remain undisciplined and aren’t focused on meaningful goals.
If you’re spending most of the time with the same people and not making progress in life then it’s time to be around new people. Research shows that being around new people will make us happier and we feel more connected with the world around us.
Friends, family, or your partner may feel uncertain about your goals and the decisions you make. Remember, this is your life not theirs. This doesn’t mean that you don’t care about what they have to say. It means you understand that their opinions don’t define who you are or who you are becoming.
Are the people I spend the most time with helping me grow in my life or are they holding me back?
Answer this honestly to yourself and really think about it. Start trying to spend more time around individuals who support your goals and dreams. This will ensure that you are a part of a group of people who has a positive influence on you.
The key to becoming successful at whatever you do is by being around more like-minded people in that area who motivate you to keep going after your desires and who you can learn from. Continue to strive for relationships that encourage you to become a better person everyday.
“I have learned that champions aren’t just born; champions can be made when they embrace and commit to life-changing positive habits.” ―Lewis Howes
2. Toxic thoughts
There’s a saying “the way you speak to yourself matters most.”
The reason I was depressed after my initial career failures was because of the thoughts I had and the conversations I was having with myself.
Where attention goes, energy flows. If you are constantly focused on thoughts of guilt, anger, frustration, shame, or resentment then you will have more of these experiences and emotions show up in your life.
This occurs when you decide to focus on toxic thoughts because your brain is always in search for more of what you’re paying attention to. You have been born with the gift of choice. This means you can decide to focus your energy on negative or positive thoughts.
what to do:
That’s the power of focus and concentration. Fix your attention on positive thoughts and live a positive life. I never used to think that I could become a happy and positive person. I had to rewire my inner thoughts and upgrade my mindset.
It was by listening other people’s success stories that really changed the way I thought about myself and the world around me. It’s very powerful to hear the adversity others have went through and how they have still managed to become very successful and satisfied. That was the life changer for me.
If they could achieve happiness, fulfillment, and success then so could I. I immersed myself in inspiration and motivational videos because they made me feel grateful to be alive and they still do. My life was missing a positive influence and that’s where I found it.
I’ve been developing myself ever since and it has been such a remarkable journey. I still have my ups and downs but who doesn’t. Personal development and self-improvement is a daily practice that creates success in all other areas of your life.
3. Toxic beliefs
The way we perceive the world consists of Thought, emotion and belief.
Our beliefs turn into our behaviors. If you believe that health is the most important pillar to success then you’ll eat the right foods, exercise, and stay disciplined.
If you believe you don’t have time for your health then you’ll never find yourself taking steps that help you become healthy and you’ll think you’re stuck that way.
There are two principles which will determine if you become successful or stay average: Growth mindset vs. Fixed Mindset
Growth mindset: Adopting the belief that your intelligence can be developed by learning new skills and deliberately trying to improve yourself.
Fixed mindset: Believing that you we’re born with a fixed intelligence that cannot be developed or improved upon and that circumstances won’t change.
Most of us are never taught that we can become anything we choose to be by dedicating our time, focus, and concentration on that desired result.
We can grow into anything we desire to be by following the steps of others who’ve achieved our desired result or outcome. If you don’t believe that you can grow then you never will.
I’m writing this to you with much love and respect—you need to stop believing your incapable of achieving your goals.
Believing your incapable keeps the door of opportunities closed for you. You will never read the books or listen to the advice of the people who matter most. It’s when you change your belief about the world when the true magic happens.
The most important thing to stay away from are any distractions which do not bring you closer to your goals in life and causes you to be a procrastinate.
We are by far the most distracted in today’s world because the battle for what has our attention starts as soon as we wake up in the morning. Most people wake up and the first thing they do is begin checking notifications, scrolling through social media, and reacting to yesterdays problems.
People say they want to be successful in their health, relationships, finances, and careers. But they never spend the proper time working or developing those areas. Generally they became distracted and lazy to take action on what’s important.
I can assure you that spending 3–4 hours a day watching t.v, Netflix, playing video games or on random Facebook videos will not move you closer to your goals. It’s not that you can’t do these things but do less of them. This is why a year will go by and people wonder how they’re still in the same place.
You can’t keep doing the same things and expecting different results. Not all repeated actions bring us closer to our goals especially if they are not helping us grow. Exercising consistently keeps you healthy and not doing this consistently enough develops health issues.
What to do:
Utilize your valuable time to work on the fields of your life that are most important to you. Focusing on health, relationships, career and finances is a great place to start improving upon. You can start where you are and you don’t have to wait for the right moment.
Don’t complain about time shortage when you spend it on things which are not of any significance to your goals. Each day you procrastinate on what’s important will delay your results from manifesting.
Do I tend to put off or procrastinate on important goals? Am I a different person mentally, physically, and emotionally than I was a year ago?
Only you will know,if you’re truly procrastinating on your life and being lazy about doing what matters. Successful people have learned that their time is very precious and spending that time growing keeps them successful.
As best-selling author Robin Sharma said, “Change is hard at first, messy in the middle, and gorgeous at the end.”
Sometimes abandon a bad thing from your life is more important than adding a good one for growing in life.
